The Faded Roster Card

A small discovery in an old desk drawer reminds us that believing in someone before the world does is its own kind of magic.

I found a crumpled roster card from a youth tournament tucked behind old files—the kind coaches print at the start of summer, full of hopeful names. One player's photo had a tiny star penciled beside it. No explanation, just that star.

Years later, that player went on to represent his country. But what struck me was the star itself—made by someone who saw potential before highlight reels existed, before anyone else was looking. A coach or parent or friend who simply believed first.

We spend so much time waiting for proof, for the moment everyone agrees someone is worth cheering for. But the real magic happens earlier—in that quiet moment when one person marks a name with a star and decides, Yes. This one.
