The Waiting Room Pencil

A small act of creativity transforms a anxious moment into something meaningful.

My daughter sat in the doctor's waiting room, legs swinging nervously. The anxiety was building—I could see it in her shoulders.

Then a little girl across the room started drawing with a pencil stub on the back of a receipt.

My daughter watched for a moment, then asked if she could join. Soon they were creating together—a dragon, then a castle, then something neither of them could quite name but loved anyway.

They didn't exchange names. When we were called back, they simply waved.

In the car, my daughter held up her drawing. "That was fun," she said. The nervousness had melted.

Sometimes the smallest moments—a shared pencil, a few minutes of creation with a stranger—remind us that connection is always waiting, just beneath the surface. Even in the hardest moments, we're not really alone.
